A Message from Kathleen I consider myself lucky that for the last four years, I’ve worked for a company that values life/work balance. Because of my career path, I’ve always been able to work virtually and I’ve usually been able to maintain a part-time schedule (more or less). When it became clear that a fulltime recruiter was needed, we opted for a job sharing arrangement and for the last few months, Holly Villar and I have been happily working as Oak Hill’s fulltime recruiter. One of the biggest challenges we faced was how to stay informed and on top of projects. The answer came by accident one day in our weekly staff meeting. Val couldn’t remember which of us she’d given a particular task to, so she laughed and said “Holleen, what’s the status of this?” From there, the wheels were in motion. We came up with the idea of having one email address that would go to us both so holleen@oakhillcorporation was born. This small change has dramatically improved efficiency for everyone. Many companies, including Verizon, Juniper, Motorola and HP and have used job sharing as an employee incentive with great success. Companies are able to attract and retain top performers who prefer more flexibility in their schedules and, in return, they get employees who are more motivated, loyal, productive, and if the job sharing employees’ skills compliment each other well, the company gets a lot more bang for their buck. While Holly and I wanted to job share because of family responsibilities, I often think about how this kind of arrangement could benefit companies looking to do more with less.
